Wed 20 Jul
|Bardsey Island, Wielka Brytania

Date and time:
20 Jul 2022, 10:00 – 23 Jul 2022, 10:00
Bardsey Island, Wielka Brytania
About the trip:
The Llŷn Peninsula, known as the Snowdon's Arm, is an amazingly beautiful place.
Llŷn's mix of culture and heritage, traditional farms and small harbors, beaches, bays and sea cliffs is completely different than anything else you can find in Wales - or elsewhere.
No wonder then that the coast is a protected "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty". It has an area of about 400 km2 and is inhabited by 20,000 people.
It has historically been the site of pilgrims' path to Bardsey Island. Its relative isolation helped preserve its distinct culture and Welsh language.
The history of the peninsula as a place of pilgrimage is supported by many deep wells, even from the pre-Christian period.
The peninsula is characterized by small rural settlements, with low and small buildings made of available natural materials.
The industrial activity was limited to the extraction of granite, zinc, lead, copper and manganese. Most of the population made a living from catching herring, as well as crabs and lobsters.
This is Wales in a nutshell but at its best. We invite you for special days. The expedition is active, but it gives a feeling of relaxation, tranquility and rest.
DAY I
We come to a camping located at the very end of the peninsula, which is a great starting point. We set up tents and set off on the amazing trail leading through the cliffs to the village of Aberdaron, passing Porth Meudwy on the way. We will go on a route that will show us all the richness of rock formations of this very characteristic coast of the Llŷn Peninsula.
Aberdaron is a fishing village that was the last stop for pilgrims on the way to Enlli's Ynys, "Island of the 20,000 Saints", also known as Bardsey Island, now a National Wildlife Reserve known worldwide for its birdlife. The famous poet RS Thomas lived in a cottage in the beautiful grounds of Plas y Rhiw, a small National Trust mansion. Get ready for amazing views of the entire coast from Cape Mynydd Mawr. In Aberdaron, we stay in a place that serves the best fresh fish'n'chips we've ever had. The entire walk is approx. 9-10 km.
Integration evening.
DAY II
In the morning, after breakfast, we will go on a short trek in the surrounding hills, learn about the history of the region, its natural values and legends associated with it. In the afternoon, relaxation and free time.
DAY III
From the morning we will go by cars to the parking lot located near Porth Meudwa, which we will reach after a 15-minute walk. Porth is still the best starting point for Bardsey Island. It is also a place from which local fishermen go out to catch crabs and hamsters every day. However, we will come here for one purpose - with one of the inhabitants of the island we will go by speedboat to the island of Bardsey. The cruise should take approx. 30 minutes.
Its Welsh name Ynys Enlli is known as the legendary island of 20,000 saints. It is the fourth largest offshore island in Wales. Bardsey has been an important place of worship since Saint Cadfan built the monastery in 516. During the Middle Ages it was a major pilgrimage center and until 1212 it was a regular Augustinian canon. In 1537, the monastery was dissolved and its buildings demolished by Henry VIII in 1537. However, the island remains an attraction for pilgrims to this day.
Bardsey Island is primarily known for its wildlife and rugged scenery. In 1953 a bird observatory was established here. Mainly due to the location of the island on important migration routes. With a bit of luck, we will be able to observe a rich community of seabirds, including beautiful puffins !!! The island is also one of the best places in Gwynedd to observe Atlantic Gray Seals. During the cruise to the island and back, you will have the chance to spot dolphins and porpoises.
The island's spirituality and sanctity, its relative remoteness and isolation, and the legend that it is Merlin's burial place have given it a special place in Wales' cultural life, drawing artists, writers and musicians to its shores to its shores.
We will spend 4 hours on the island. He is waiting for a walk to an atmospheric village, we will visit the ruins of a monastery, we will climb the highest viewpoint on the island of Mynydd Enlli, we will visit local residents and we will try traditional Welsh beer. We will approach the lighthouse and then rest on the seashore, admiring the cluster of Atlantic seals and sea birds (it is worth taking binoculars with you !!!)
In the evening, we still have to climb the highest point of the campsite sun - Mynydd Mawr for sunset, which can be really beautiful in this place.
DAY IV
In the morning, after packing the camp, we will go by car to discover the wonderful, wild, Welsh beaches situated in climatic coves and hidden between the cliffs. We do not reveal which beaches we will visit, because it is supposed to be a surprise
We will return home in the late afternoon hours.
