BRERETON HEATH RESERVE & JODRELL OBSERVATORY - "Family - Educational Meeting on the Trail"

Date and time:

08 Feb 2025, 10:00 – 19:00

Brereton Heath, Brereton Heath Ln, Brereton Heath, Wielka Brytania

About the trip:

Our Family Meetings in 2025 will begin with a visit to 2 unique places of great educational and cognitive value.

In the morning, we will meet at the gates of Brereton Heath Nature Reserve. Most of the reserve is covered by a 50-acre forest, consisting mainly of birch and oak species.

The lake located in its buffer zone makes it, together with the forest, an ideal habitat for many species of birds. We will also find areas of heathland, meadows and wetlands here.

During our walk, we will learn about the most interesting species of birds living here, as well as rich flora.

The next point of the day will be a visit to the Jodrell Bank observatory.

Here, the educational values will not concern nature, but what is high above us - in space. The Jodrell Bank telescopes will make an incredible impression on everyone.

The largest of them, with a diameter of over 70 m, was the only one in Europe that could follow the landing of the Apollo 11 spacecraft on the moon in 1969!!!

For over 75 years, this place has been at the forefront of understanding groundbreaking discoveries in the world of research. It has been recognised for its contribution to science and education and has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Here, we will visit the Planets Room to learn about our solar system and the interactions between its components.

We will move on to a section with practical experiments that will help us understand the universe even better.

After a lunch break, we will set off on a 20-minute walk during which we will learn how telescopes work and what is being studied by scientists from Manchester University and beyond.
